Football betting: the markets, the margin and what knowledge can and cannot do

Football is the most bet-on sport in the world. Fans who watch a lot of it often feel that should give them an edge. This guide explains the common markets and why the margin is an opponent that team knowledge alone cannot beat.

The common markets

MarketWhat you bet on
1X2Home win, draw or away win after regular time
Over/under 2.5 goalsThree or more goals, or two or fewer
Both teams to scoreWhether each side scores at least once
HandicapOne side starts with a goal start or deficit

Worked example: the margin in a 1X2 market

With odds of 2.10 on the home side, 3.40 on the draw and 3.60 on the away side, the implied probabilities are 47.6%, 29.4% and 27.8% — together 104.8%. The margin is roughly 4.8%. Across many matches like this you get back around 95 for every 100 staked, even if your judgement is exactly as good as the market's. The margin is the price of playing.

Why the draw catches people out

Once a fan has picked a favourite, the draw is easily forgotten. Yet favourites draw often enough, and in a 1X2 market a bet on the favourite loses just as much on a draw as on a defeat. Before backing a "certain" winner, convert the odds into a probability and ask whether you really know more than the market.

Knowledge, news and timing

Line-ups, injuries and form move the odds — but bookmakers follow the same news, usually faster than you. Once information is public, it is usually already priced in. That does not make analysis worthless; it means any edge is small and rare.

A budget for a round of matches

Set an amount per round, for example 20 split into at most four bets of 5. Do not raise stakes after a loss, and do not bet on matches you would not otherwise follow just because they are on now. In-play betting is the fastest way to blow a budget — see bet types.
