Slots explained: randomness, payout rates and swings
Slots are the largest category in most online casinos, and the eight games this site covers from Duell appear to belong to it. The art ranges from tentacled fruit to pirates, but underneath they work the same way. Understanding the mechanics makes it easier to treat them as entertainment with a known price.
The random number generator
Each spin is decided by a random number generator (RNG) the moment you press the button. The spinning reels are an animation of a result that is already fixed. The generator has no memory: a spin after twenty losses has exactly the same chance as the first. There are no "hot" or "cold" machines and no lucky time of day.
Payout rate (RTP)
The payout rate is what a game returns on average over a very large number of spins. An RTP of 96% means the house keeps 4% of everything staked over time. Many games exist in several versions with different payout rates, and the operator chooses the version. The correct figure is in the game's own help screen, not on sites that describe the game.
Volatility and hit frequency
| Term | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Volatility | How much results swing — many small or few large wins |
| Hit frequency | How often a spin returns anything at all |
| Maximum win | The largest possible win, usually as a multiple of the stake |
| Paytable | What each combination pays at your stake |
A "win" smaller than the stake still counts as a hit. A high hit frequency can therefore hide a falling balance.
Bonus features
In-game free spins, multipliers, hold-and-win rounds and prize wheels concentrate much of a game's value into rare moments. That makes play exciting but also swingier. Read how features trigger in the help screen. The game guides show how: Alien Fruits 3, Fishing Time, St Patricks Pots Hold And Win and the rest.
What regulated markets require
Several regulators set minimum spin times, ban autoplay or cap the stake per spin on online slots, because speed and stake size drive losses. Where the operator does not impose such limits, you can adopt them as personal rules.
Go to the offerA budget that can absorb the swings
Worked example: 30 units at 0.15 per spin gives 200 stakes — enough to ride out normal swings in a medium-volatility game without the session ending in minutes. Decide when you will stop if you are ahead, too; it is the hardest limit to keep.
